Are you using too much water, swilling it down the drain unnecessarily? If so you are just one of many who wash throughly empty cans/ jars/ bottles etc, all to be recycled! Yes me too but apparently we shouldn’t be doing so.you using too much water, swilling it down the drain unnecessarily? If so you are just one of many who wash throughly empty cans/ jars/ bottles etc, all to be recycled! Yes me too but apparently we shouldn’t be doing so.

Richard Kirkman, the UK boss of Britain’s biggest waste management company, said there was no need to wash out cans and jars before recycling them.  This is because they wash them in an industrial machine anyway.

He said: “If it’s not washed, we wash it in an industrial machine later anyway. If it’s washed when we collect it, OK, we use less water !

Don’t leave half a jar of jam in there, but you don’t need to scrub it out.

He also said that they wash in an industrial machine, so washing at home is just wasting water. However he also said a sticky jar is OK but not half a jar of jam nor a bottle of sour milk! Common Sense must prevail! He also criticised the use of aluminium cans for drinks rather than plastic! Interesting? Yes , apparently the cans will be more difficult to recycle as they will be lined with plastic, whereas the simple plastic bottle can be recycled and re manufactured time and time again, so not as Evil as we are all led to believe! Just don’t get me started on paper! All those trees that are destroyed and the Kraft paper industry uses nasty chemicals!

As for recycling, as I live in central London, the council has a simple solution, it all goes into the same ( plastic bag) and then thrown into an industrial centrifuge, which does the sorting ! Genius! Why don’t more councils and countries use this method! It certainly encourages people to recycle, ( being basically lazy) it makes life much easier.

Meanwhile, I / we haven’t progressed far with the new toy! Today I spent a long while trying to to link it to my phone/ internet. I failed! I also spent a while trying to connect a pencil to this machine, again I failed! But I will do it, the old maxim If at first you don’t succeed!

In between I have made some chocolate bars. Whilst on a golfing trip to Greece, there was at breakfast the most yummy chocolate bars! I know chocolate at breakfast but these came highly recommended by my 16 year old grand daughter, who had been there with her mother on a press trip ! They took some finding amongst the smorgasbord of offerings that were to be found during breakfast. They were to be found in the Gluten free/ Vegan sections . I have been trying to recreate them at home to mixed results.

Peanut Butter Oat Bars

  • 200g rolled oats
  • 100g smooth peanut butter
  • 80g honey/ maple syrup / golden syrup ( sugar base English syrup
  • ½ tsp cinnamon( optional
  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Heat oven to 170°C / 150°C fan.
  2. Put all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix well together, it is best getting your hands messy
  3. Press very firmly into a lined 20cm square tin.
  4. Bake for about 15 they should be soft
  5. Leave to cool completely before cutting into bars.

Melt some good quality chocolate in a microwaveable container,But be careful chocolate melts very quickly, so use a lowish setting and zap for about 30 seconds at a time. Chocolate melting in the microwave will retain its shape. Stir until smooth and pour over the cooled oat bars.

Our other project was to master poaching eggs in the microwave, and yes it is possible and again with some trial and error we have come up with possible success.

Himself started trying as he can be partial to poached eggs on toast for breakfast and although he is prepared to tackle them in the traditional way, it just takes a little more patience ( something he could lack from time to time)

Very simply, using ramekins or small bowls, lightly grease them and put in about 1/2 inch water in each. Crack into each an egg and carefully puncture ( with a small skewer or needle) the yolk. If this not done, they are in danger of bursting. Pop into your microwave on high for as little as 75 seconds. Himself does 3 at the time for 1 minute and then adds a few seconds if he feels it necessary. ( he likes very soft whites and very runny yolks. Mine ( 2 eggs) I did for about 75 seconds, I like my whites firm and yolks thick runny.

I like what has become a trendy breakfast/ brunch dish, which is smushed avocado on toast with poached eggs. For me it is a simple dinner / supper dish but whenever you eat it, the method is the same, and change out the avocado for smushed peas/ broad beans to even edamame beans .
